Sea Witch originally titled Heartless is a Little Mermaid retelling from the villain’s POV. With a Danish setting, and with magic more at the forefront of the story, we learn how the Sea Witch/Ursula became the way she is.
Sea Witch has an extremely slow start. A lot of reviewers DNF’ed around the 30-40%, and it’s true, the book doesn’t really pick up until around the 60% point. There’s a lot of set up with mostly dull characters and little to no plot. Even after all major characters are introduced, the plot really doesn’t pick up until the twist. Which, to be honest, the twist was pretty good.
So while this was a pretty decent retelling, with a lot of interesting points, and unique differences in the original, it just starts off too slow.
I would recommend more for those who may not have read as much, or those who like flowery, expressive writing.
