Deliver Us From Evil

"Basically what I want to say to them is: It should not have happened."

The Catholic Church sex-abuse scandal is viewed from the perspective of a pedophile priest and his many victims in this 2007 Oscar(R)-nominee for Best Documentary Feature. Called 'unnerving' by the New York Times, director Amy Berg's film reveals the story of Father Oliver O'Grady who preyed on children in California--while his superiors simply moved him from parish to parish

I was originally looking for a horror movie to watch this evening when I came upon Deliver Us From Evil. The reason why I even stopped and read about it was because of the horror movie of the same title. But, this movie I found is a documentary. And one that tells an even more horrific tale then any horror movie could have come up with.

I WISH I could tell you that this was a made up story HBO had on just to get views and that none of it was factual. But, unfortunately, the story is real. It's unbelievable what today's society has become where Priests, Popes, and Bishops of the likes will stand up for their own before they stand up for children who were victim to terrible abuse.

I also wish that the "pedophile" was labeled to 17 or 16 year olds. It would still be horrific to think of a child of 16 getting raped by his or her priest, but the actual story is worse. The children ranged from 9 months to twelve years.

Rape and sexual abuse are terrible, TERRIBLE things. I would not wish these acts on ANYONE. This crime will effect and is effecting these children for the rest of their lives. And because of this, it will be hard for them to be anything but children again. This also effects their friends and families and it HURTS knowing you can't, no, didn't do anything,

Some interesting quotes at the end to think about:

  • Since 1950, sexual abuse has cost the church over one billion dollars in legal settlements and expenses
  • Over 1000,000 case of clergy victims have come forward in the United States alone
  • Experts say more than 80 percent of sexual abuse victims never report their abuse
