Roller Girl is a story of two friends the summer before middle school, who end up going to different summer programs. Astrid, our main character, goes to a roller derby camp, while her best friend, Nicole, goes to a ballet camp. As they find more difference than similarities between them, the two struggle to remain close friends, especially with the pressure of boys, popularity, and their different interests.

I LOVED this book. Astrid is such a cool kid, and I loved how time and time again she acted just like a kid. She constantly made mistakes, and she continued to learn from them, or she’d make them again and then learn from them. But what mattered most to her were her passions and friends and family.

Astrid’s mom was also a complete rockstar. She’s a single parent with a career who also tries to stay active in Astrid’s life, from taking her to all of her practices, to keeping up with all of her friends and (sometimes) enemies.

This book is so realistic and covers the pressure of becoming a teenager flawlessly whiteout trying to hide anything or glamorize it. Roller Girl also does a good job of showing humility and hard work, and how things don’t always work out the way we want them to.

I’m an adult and loved this. And I’ve already recommended this to my sister and niece to read too. I think this book is perfect for all ages.
