Blanca & Roja

Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore

Swan Lake meets Snow White and Blood Red in this lyrical story about a family curse in which one of two sisters will turn into a Swan.

The author does a great job capturing the feelings and emotions of its four different narrators and main characters. She also somehow accurately portrays all of their separate struggles and worries. Each character, while fictional, has real world qualities and traits that real people can identify and relate to.

My favorite character was Roja, a Latinx girl who felt like she didn’t belong even in her own family. She feels outshone by her sister’s beauty and goodness, and is conflicted with who to trust and still continues to put her sister first.
